Business Scope

PTPN VIII (PT. Perkebunan Nusantara VIII) is a state-owned enterprise in the plantation sector in Indonesia with a business scope including cultivating plants, processing, and selling plantation commodity such as tea, rubber, and palm as the main commodity, and also quinine and cocoa. Until now, PTPN VIII is managing 41 plantations and 1 hospital. The plantations are spread in 11 districts/cities all around West Java (Sukabumi, Bogor, Cianjur, Bandung District, West Bandung District, Bandung City, Garut, Tasikmalaya, Purwakarta, Subang, and Ciamis) and 2 districts in Banten Province (Lebak, Pandeglang).

The concessions areas are 114.471 ha consisting in 74.431 ha of plantation area, and 40.040 ha of infrastructures and other facilities.

Tea Commodity

PTPN VIII manages 24 tea plantations on a 25.905,3 ha productive land. These plantations spread quite vastly in 6 districts which are Sukabumi (2 plantations), Bogor (2 plantations), Cianjur (3 plantations), Subang (2 plantations), Bandung district and West Bandung district (12 plantations), and Garut district (3 plantations).

The tea productions keep rising each year thanks to the management of PTPN VIII in cultivation, picking method, and processing in order to meet the buyer requirements. The other cause is the involvement of Pusat Penelitian Teh dan Kina (PPTK) (Tea and Quinine Researching Center) Gambung to conduct some researching that contribute in production and quality improvement. Besides green tea, there are also 2 types of black tea processing which are Orthodox and CTC.

Tea Marketing

PTPN VIII exports 80% of its production to America, Canada, England, Germany, Dutch, and other countries in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Japan, and other countries in Asia. The tea is exported in bulk and packed in paper-sack (90%). But some is also packed in packages such as Walini, Sedep, Goalpara, Malabar, and Gunung Mas. Usually, the bulk tea that has been sold abroad is used as a blending ingredient by the importers. The PTPN VIII tea will be blended with imported tea owned by these importers. So, if you drink imported tea, there is most likely a chance that the Indonesian tea is inside it.

The tea purchasing in Indonesia by the importers is usually done in Jakarta auction place and held by Jakarta Kantor Pemasaran Bersama (KPB) (Joint Marketing Office). But PTPN VIII also serves direct selling and long term contract through our management office:

Indonesian Tea and its characteristics

PTPN VIII tea plantations are located in mountain plateau more than 1500 meters above the sea level. The volcanic soil and the tropical climate are very supportive for the growth of the plants. These conditions have made PTPN VIII tea able to penetrate the world market. Moreover, the PTPN VIII tea products quality is watched closely in every factory and management office. Therefore the products have some characteristics which are famous among the buyer in the world market, such as the flavor, the color, the captivating aroma, and the exclusive tea juice.

The benefits of drinking tea

Tea is good for health and nutrition. It also strengthens the immunity system to defend itself against viruses and diseases caused by bacteria. Tea also contains vitamin C, it strengthens muscles and blood vessel, controls the heart, accelerates the urination, increases mental strength, appetite, and blood circulation, protects teeth, prevents stomachache, makes eyes healthy, good for hair growth, reduces the cholesterol in the blood, eases digestion, reduces anxiety, sharpens memory, and refreshes.

Tea downstream industry

PTPN VIII has its own special blending and teabag and bulk packing factory which is known as Industri Hilir Teh (IHT) (Tea Downstream Industry). This factory produces tea which are branded Malabar and Walini, and also exported tea based on the buyer’s order, either loose-leaf tea or bagged tea. The company also has other retail tea packing factories for the tea branded Gunung Mas, Sedep, and Goalpara to fulfill the domestic market demands. PTPN VIII also accepts the tea packing order based on the buyer requests.

Garden Tour

As a profit based company, PTPN VIII does not only depend on the various commodities as its core business. The company management also tries to expand the potency of agro tourism in its all plantation. Moreover, almost all of its territory is located in the West Java Mountain which has an exotic view as a tourism place. There is some tourism places belong to PTPN VIII which are quite popular either for domestic and foreign tourists. Among them are Agrowisata Perkebunan Teh Malabar (Malabar Tea Plantation Agro Tourism) in Bandung District, Perkebunan Teh Rancabali (Rancabali Tea Plantation) in Bandung District, Perkebunan Teh Gunung Mas (Gunung Mas Tea Plantation) in Bogor District, Perkebunan Sukawana Pangheotan (Sukawana Pangheotan Plantation) in West Bandung District, and some other tea plantations such as Perkebunan Ciater (Ciater Plantation), Goalpara, and Perkebunan Karet Pasir Badak (Pasir Badak Rubber Plantation) in Sukabumi District. Moreover, to facilitate the visit of the plantation for the tourists, they also cooperate with travel agents.
