Health Benefits of Tea

The camellia sinesis plant, which tea is derived from, has shown cancer fighting properties. The leaves contain polyphenols, which gives tea its antioxidant properties. Polyphenols in tea have been known to:

1. Help protect cells from the normal aging process
2. Help prevent blood clotting
3. Help lower cholesterol levels-Vegetarian Times, January 2003 - reported drinking 4 cups of green tea lowered bad cholestrol by 10%
4. Help neutralize enzymes that aid in the growth of tumors
5. Help deactivate cancer promoters
6. Help stimulate the immune system.

While all this is true that does not mean you should substitute tea for the medicine your doctor prescribes for your medical condition. Conversely if you decide to discuss using tea in your diet to reduce some of the medicines you are taking and your doctor ignores the question or tells you it's nonsense maybe you should consider finding a new health care provider. The benefits can be seen in as few as 2-4 cups of tea per day.

Which Tea offers the most health benefits?

Black, white, green, red rooibos, oolong, or herbal? First a quick lesson about Tea. Most teas are made from the leaves of the camellia sinesis plant. This plant contains polyphenols in the leaves which have shown antioxidant properties. Tea made from this plant ranks as high as a vegetable in health benefits so drink up. Because Tea is made by harvesting and then processing the leaves of the camellia sinesis plant you want to consider what processing takes out of the final product.

The tea with the least processing contain the most polyphenols and thus the most health benefits. This means you should consider white or green tea when looking for maximum health benefits. The darker the tea the more processing it has endured and and the less of the antioxidant potential remains. Herbal teas and red rooibos are not made from the leaves of the camellia plant and in general do not have any particular health benefits. Some herbal teas aren't really tea at all. They are simply infusions of herbs, flowers, roots, spices. Eventhough the red rooibos from South Africa as well as herbal teas are not made from the camellia plant they promote other benefits such as relaxation and calmness.
